CSC 220: 3-D Computer Graphics Tools and Literacy

Tools: Autodesk Maya, Sculptris, Makerbot 3D Printer

For my first time 3D modeling using Maya, I found the software program to be a bit confusing to use however, I found the tutorials to be very helpful in getting a basic understanding of the program. The first version of the scorpion, I created in separate components using basic polygonal shapes. However, it was believed creating the model using multiple polygonal shapes would be a bit problematic when printing. Given the possibility that this could happen, I decided it was best to start over. As a result, I proceeded to redo my model. I found it difficult to stick to using one polygonal shape because the model kept going inside out. To work around this issue, I imported the file as an OBJ into Sculptris and extruded it within the program. In terms of the outcome of the printed object, the original version of the scorpion did not turn out as clean-looking. However, I was quite pleased with the second version of the scorpion I printed.

Overall, I enjoyed this project. It was definitely a learning experience using the different software programs and using the 3D printer to see my creation come to life.
